The program doesn't seem to do anything beyond connecting to a network and displaying the connection strength, so it seems effectively superfluous when Windows already does the same. I then checked its CPU usage in task manager, and it was quite high, so I was wondering if anyone could tell me whether Ralink is necessary, or if I can uninstall it. I can confirm this issue affects at least these two routers even with the latest firmware: Netgear WNR2000 and Netgear WNR1000v3.
